Why a Natural Perfume is Important to Your Health

Why a Natural Perfume is Important to Your Health

The fragrance industry has its roots in mystery and romantism, which can be intriguing.  The unfortunate truth is that the world-wide, multi-billion-dollar fragrance industry is under-regulated at best, or not regulated at all, in terms of ingredients used.  Full disclosure of ingredients is not mandatory but adds to the mystery and intrigue of your favorite perfume, at the possible expense of your health.  Fragrance is a leading cause of skin inflammation and allergy reactions.  According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), about 2.5 million Americans have fragrance allergies.

What’s in My Perfume?

Scientific American: The Environmental Working Group (EWG) Report that, while many popular perfumes, colognes and body sprays contain trace amounts of natural essences, they also typically contain a dozen or more potentially hazardous synthetic chemicals, some of which are derived from petroleum. To protect trade secrets, makers are allowed to withhold fragrance ingredients, so consumers can’t rely on labels to know what hazards may lurk inside that new bottle of perfume.  “A rose may be a rose,” reports EWG. “But that rose-like fragrance in your perfume may be something else entirely, concocted from any number of the fragrance industry’s 3,100 stock chemical ingredients, the blend of which is almost always kept hidden from the consumer.” “The average fragrance product tested contained 14 secret chemicals not listed on the label,” reports EWG, which analyzed the Campaign’s data. “Among them are chemicals associated with hormone disruption and allergic reactions, and many substances that have not been assessed for safety in personal care products.” EWG adds that some of the undisclosed ingredients are chemicals “with troubling hazardous properties or with a propensity to accumulate in human tissues.” Examples include diethyl phthalate, a chemical found in 97 percent of Americans and linked to sperm damage in human epidemiological studies, and musk ketone, which concentrates in human fat tissue and breast milk.

Label Reading

If you are a label reader for your food products because you are concerned about what you are putting IN YOUR BODY, you may wish to start reading the labels on your perfumes, lotions, skin care products, hair care products, cosmetics, etc., to discover what you are putting ON YOUR BODY.  You may find many undesirable chemical additives, as well as synthetic additives, you would never otherwise put onto your body.

Wearing Natural Perfume

Natural perfumery an art as old as civilization, people have loved the scents of the beautifully fragrant plants since God created them.  There are 30 oils listed in the Bible, some used as perfumes, some for healing, others  for worship.  Many of the precious oils and fragrances were used for perfumery and purification. There is no reason to stop using these natural ingredients today, and every indication that we SHOULD use them, and use more of them!

When you are used to wearing commercially manufactured fragrances, perfumes, colognes and sprays with all the petrochemical fixatives, additives and extenders, wearing a natural perfume is a different experience.  Since natural perfumes, which are actually healthier for you, are made with pure, natural ingredients (essential oils, carriers, extracts) and don’t include chemical scent extenders or preservatives they generally won’t last as long on your skin as their chemical counter-parts.  As would be expected, natural perfumes and fragrances come from nature, oils, extracts and essences of roots, barks, twigs, resins, rinds and flowers. Just because it is natural, doesn’t mean a few people don’t have allergic reaction to the natural ingredients. It is always recommended to apply a small amount of the natural perfume and check for reactions first.

Staying Power of Natural Perfume

A high quality, natural perfume should last 2 to 4 hours on your skin if the concentration of precious essential oils is high enough.  Whereas perfumes with synthetic petrochemicals can last in/on the skin for days.  (That doesn’t even sound healthy.) You can help your natural perfume last up to 30% longer if you apply it to moisturized skin.  With natural perfume you’re the ultimate base note, so layer and reapply as you like. Instead of masking your scent, a natural perfume formulation will likely blend with your unique body chemicals and create a scent unique to you, while adding health, mind and body benefits along the way.
